Production Company Logo Reasearch

Some production companies create extraordinary idents which capture the attention of the audience as they stand out efficiently from other production companies. Therefore resulting in the audience both remembering and recognising their company in the future. An example of this is the production company, Fox Searchlight Pictures. They oppose the simplistic approach and use a very unique and bold ident to represent the company. It stands out from the rest due to its gold colour scheme and effective animations. Other companies which also use a similar style are Paramount, Dream Works, Columbia and Disney. These companies include more complicated animations and also incorporate a realistic element.

Most production companies habit a very simplistic approach towards their logos, consisting mostly of basic shapes, few colours and simple text. This production company opposes the above and has used a rather basic interpretation. Spectrevision uses a logo consisting of 3 triangles in colours of red and blue with a slight glow, haze in the centre. Then underneath in plain white text, the name of their company is visible.

Additionally, various productions create logos to relate to the genre which they feature in. Using associated colour schemes and iconography. In Hammer Films' logo they use a red font which is stereotypically associated with blood and therefore suggest the genre of horror. The font of the text also furthers this impression which relates to the genre better.  Even without seeing the logo, It can also be considered that the use of the word 'Hammer' is iconic of weaponry which is associated with violence and therefore leading the the assumption that the chosen genre is horror.

Plans For Shooting (Group Work)

Hair and Make Up
For the production, 'CAPTIVE' we aspire to use make up and costume as a significant aspect of our opening. We will acquire make-up to our leading character to associate our project with the conventions of media. Specific make-up will be applied to our main character in able to convey injuries such as bruising and cuts. Also we will make him look dirty to add a further realistic dimension to our opening. For this production we have contacted Lilly Pannifer, a local make-up artist with intermediate experience, who has clarified their availability on the dates of shooting. She has agreed that she will contribute and be responsible for this aspect of our film.

Lighting
Due to the majority of our opening being shot in daylight hours we will rely mostly on the natural light source present on the day. The denouement of the film will be filmed into hours of darkness. For this we will experiment with lighting such as external flashes and strong torch lights to achieve the required effect. We already have the aforementioned light sources in our possession, so they are obtainable for our use on the day of filming.

Props

We will need many properties on the day for use to conform to the genre-specific conventions (mise-en-scéne). The props we will need to bring to the shoot are:

  • Dolls (variety, china)
  • Mirror
  • Wooden Chair
  • Tape Recorder
  • Rope
  • Fake Blood
  • Black Hood
  • Character's costume
  • Character's Camera
Further Items items needed (not to be shown in film)
  • Inflatable dingy
  • Wheelbarrow for transportation
  • Camera equipment ((tripod, filters, 3 DSLR's, Lenses (Fixed, Zooms, etc.) External Mic, External Flash)
Shot Types

Before the shoot, we have carried out extensive practise, in order to confirm the shot types that we will be using on the day. We have found that the shot types that we will be using most frequently are as follows:
  • Close Ups
  • Mid Shots
  • Establishing Shots
  • Extreme Close Ups
  • Long Shots
  • High-Angle Shots
  • Low- Angle Shots
  • Tracking Shots
  • Pans
Locations

We have finally confirmed the location of our shoot - North Weald Redoubt Fort. 87 Thornhill, North Weald Basset, Epping, CM16. This is completely accessible and we have made visits to the set in order to confirm any logistical queries such as transport and parking. The drive is approximately 15 minutes long and transport is not an issue, as our parents will willingly drive us. The closest public establishment is The King's Head pub, near to the car park of the building. This will be the place for us to visit in case of extreme emergency.

Primary Research - Idea Feedback

George Ring

I like the story idea as it would build suspense and it is different from the other horror films that I have seen before. The original idea and the opening would be good and the setting sets the scene well, whilst jumping immediately into the action, avoiding boring introductions. I would go and watch this film based on the film opening, I also like the title as it is appropriate to the plot and it is the one I chose in the first title survey.

Grace Cambridge

I like the story idea as it creates suspense and it creates enigma codes within the beginning. The fact that the audience will get to see flashbacks is good because it allows them to understand different things about the setting. The name is well suited to the film as it tells the audience exactly what the film is about, I also like the title as it is the one i picked within the survey.

Ellie Burrell-Bicker

Overall I think that your film opening is overflowing with suspense and entertainment. It will keep your audience at the edge of their seat and the enigma code works well with making them question the situation that occurs in the very beginning of the film opening. You have thoroughly embraced the genre as being a horror by including all key aspects of current horror movies. Ending your film opening with a cut at an intense scene and then introducing the title is extremely effective because it's most likely that I will want to then go and see this film in cinema after seeing the opening, as will most people who view this film opening. The overall idea has also been well thought about and it is evident that the planning throughout the duration of these last few weeks has been merged together effectively to create a thrilling film opening.

Danielle Fletcher

Personally, I feel the film opening appears very intense which engages the audience with the continuous suspense. The constant flashbacks creates enigma codes which will leave the audience dying to continue watching your film. I like how the scene cuts into a title screen and goes directly into the film as this leaves the audience questioning the scenes they have just seen.

Luke Sams

I really like the group's film idea. Horror is my favourite genre and from reading the opening idea that they have produced, the film would definitely appeal to me. I like the way in which they create enigma code as the scene jumps straight into action, as this would entice the viewers into watching the remainder of the film. Also, i like the title 'Captive' as it completely relates to the plot, as the character in the opening is being held against his will.

Constructing an opening, engaging the audience

Main Character

The main character of our film also brought much research and planning to our opening. Initially and ideally we hoped to include a teenage girl inn our opening to add to the horror effect top the film. Teenage girls are stereotypically used in most horror films and add the aspect of vulnerability and innocence to the film. However, we do not have access to a character like this so therefore we have resulted in choosing to use a 20 years old semi-professional actor. Despite the acting not being marked in our opening we strongly believe that by including an effective actor we will be able to engage the audience more effectively and make the opening seem more realistic thus, forming stronger emotional connections with the audience and result in them wanted to watch the remainder of the film.

Enigma Code

Our film opening as a whole could be considered as an enigma code. Several aspects of our opening will contribute to the overall effect of gaining the attention of the audience. The audience will be provoked to question why the main character is where he is, who put him there and how he got there in the first place. These questions will be raised through the audience seeing the character strapped to a chair with no previous explanations. The fact the we will include brief flashbacks displaying the character taking pictures results in the audience question why the boy was there in the first place, questioning the reasoning behind the events and where they are all taking place. The recognition of dolls in the opening will force the viewers to query why the dolls are there and whether they have any convenience an influence to the plot. The use of enigma code in our opening will make the viewer want to continue watching the entirety of the film.

Everyday Life

Through many debates on what we will include in our film opening to engage the audience, we have decided that we will not include the aspect of everyday life for a couple of reasons. Firstly, we only have a limited amount of time to intrigue the audience and by filling it up mostly with everyday life, the opening could be considered as boring and therefore result in weak connections madd wit the audience. Also through our opening we need to define the genre of our film and by including a lot of everyday life it could result in the genre of our film being vague and unclear.

Importance of Genre and what it means for my opening

Importance of Genre
Genre is very important in making films for several reasons associated with various stages and roles in creating films. Firstly, genre is vital for production companies as it allows them to create a film which is specific to a genre and also allows them to target a specific audience. Allowing them to receive the best possible feedback for their film. By knowing the genre of the film they want to create, they will be able to follow the specific conventions of their chosen genre to make a successful film. They will be able to identify and establish suitable costumes, make-up, sound, setting etc. Links with genre specific actors, producers, directors, writers, costume/make-up artists etc. will be formed and therefore allow the production companies to know all what they need to include in there opening to create the most successful film.

Accordingly, genre is equally as important for distribution companies as by following the conventions of their chosen genre, they will know the most suitable way in which their film should be marketed to make it clear to the targeted audience on what genre of film it is. By doing so, more people will be attracted to their film as they will know roughly on what the film will consists of and therefore will know whether the film is suitable for them. As more people will know whether they will like the film, the company will receive more financial income and make the maximal profits.

From the point of view of the audience genre is also specifically important as it allows them to identify whether the film is suitable for their preferences in what they aspire the film to be like. It also provides them with anticipation and confidence in what the film will be like and therefore willing to pay money to go and attend the screening.

Setting
The location which we have chosen to shoot our film is a derelict building near an abandoned radio station. This is stereotypical of the significance of settings that is included in horror movies. The fact that the building is abandoned, atmospheres of isolation can be created, creating a sense of vulnerability which could be attached to the protagonists.

Sound
In our film opening we will use a range of sounds which are associated and typical of horror movies. We will Introduce an eerie background soundtrack during the exposition of the film opening. Therefore creating tension with the audience. Additionally, we will include varying sound effects to exaggerate specific sounds which relate accordingly to the action  on screen.

Props

We will involve many stereotypical props of the horror genre into our film opening. Firstly, we selected to use old china dolls to play a significant role in our opening. We will be placing them around the scene. This also familiarises ourselves with the trends and conventions of the latest blockbusters as films such as Annabelle, The Conjuring and The Woman in Black have dolls as a main feature in their films. Other props that we will introduce will be a wooden chair, a black bag, a tape recorder, a mirror and a rope.

Character

We will be using male actor around 18 years of age as the main character of our film opening. By the character being this age, strong emotional connections can be formed with our targeted audience as they will be around a similar age and therefore relate to him. Ideally we anticipated using a young teenage girl as our main character as she would maximise the vulnerability effect we are aiming for, however we were unable to locate an effective teenage girl who was willing to play the role of our main character.

Make-up
Make-up will also play a significant role in our opening in making our main character seem as vulnerable as possible. We will apply specific make-up to make it look as the character is dirty and seem to be injured by adding several cuts and bruises. This can add a realistic factor to our opening and can result in the opening looking more professional. The association with the injuries can conclude in the audience forming stronger connections as his vulnerability will increase the sympathy felt and therefore the audience will want him to survive.

Codal Analysis - The Woman In Black

Production Log (Kieran Panchal 9652 and Isaac Randal 9655)

10/10/14 - This lesson we brainstormed initial ideas that could be used in our opening. Each of us came up with three individually. Some potential story lines agreed but not for definite.

15/10/14 We presented the best of our ideas to the class in order to gain some audience feedback. The general consensus of the feedback was that Isaac's idea was the preferred. However, this was not agreed on by our group, so we gained feedback on our other ideas in order to modify them so they could be suited to the audience preferences.

28/11/14 - We met up at a potential filming location (North Weald Redoubt Fort). Whilst here we decided and confirmed our base idea to work on. We also found that the building was suitable for filming. It was decided that we would use it for our opening.

5/11/14 -  a Talent release form, location scouting form, risk assessment form and location release templates were all created, but are yet to be filled in.

7/11/14 - We came up with a production company identity, 'Blood Orange', before producing 10 logo ideas. We then decided on our favourite: the text with blood splatter.

19/11/14 We successfully created two animations for our production company, and then decided on our favourite one for use. We also decided on a suitable classification on our film (15) after carrying out research into what each classification entails.

20/11/14 - We decided to publish our creation on social media platforms, we therefore created a Facebook and twitter page for our production company, Blood Orange Productions.

26/11/14 - Title polls were added to the Facebook page, in order to gain audience feedback and therefore choose a suitable title for our film. Also in this lesson we evidenced audio permission from our audio source 'incompetech.com'.

3/12/14 - We decided on ‘Captive’ from viewing audience feedback as this received the most votes on our Facebook page. The Certification Screen has been made and added into video sequence and further Facebook posts have been made.

5/12/14 - Location Scouting/Release Forms completed. Primary Research of classmates' opinion's completed, 5 colleagues have given their opinions on our opening, confirming that we are ready to shoot. We have finished our initial plans, including details on hair/make-up, costume, lighting, shot types and props.

12/12/14 - Risk assessment complete and all ideas finalised. Logistics in order and all props ready for shooting on the 27th December 2014.

27/12/14 - Shooting began at 9:30am and ended at 5:30pm. In this time all shooting was completed, including flashback sections (outside location) and main clip (inside). The filming process was smooth and the group followed the storyboard closely with minor diversions.

7/01/15 - Started the edit decision list. This included viewing each clip shot on the day as a group and listing whether it is usable or not.

9/01/15 - As a group we carried on completing the edit decision list and managed to finish the list during the lesson.

16/01/15 - Consequently we began the process of creating a rough cut of our intro in order to get a feel for what the final clip will be like. This process took the whole of this lesson.

18/01/15 - We continued to complete the rough cut meanwhile referring back to the clips and the edit decision list in order to aid with our shot choices.

23/01/15 - Continued to complete the rough cut. During this lesson we also showed our unfinished rough cut to the rest of the class in order to collect audience feedback.

28/01/15 - We finally completed the rough cut and have exported the clip. We have also started the final editing stage of our clip.

2/02/15 - We began advancing our rough cut to a final edit. In this session, we added some visual effects and tidied some of the footage from the previous session.

3/02/15 - As a group, we met outside of the class session in order to continue the final edit. We got the order of the clips as we wanted them for the final cut.

5/02/15 - We spent this session adding titles to the cut and then perfecting them. This was a very time consuming process as the 'jittery' nature of the titles meant creating many layers of text and editing them precisely.

11/02/15 - We finished the video in terms of clip editing. The remainder of this lesson we spent colour grading the clips, making the temperature colder, changing some of the mid tone and shadow hues whilst also adding vignettes and contrast.

Production Schedule (Isaac Randall 9655)

26/9/14 - We will start to individually think of title ideas and plot ideas, however these will not be definite.
9/10//14 - We will start to think of three initial ideas that can potentially be used as ideas for the opening. During this lesson we will present to the class our ideas in order to obtain audience feedback.

17/10/14 - We will plan out more story ideas.
24/10/14 - We will be proposing more story ideas; the audience will choose the best and most effective. The winner will be used as our opening.
5/11/14 - We will create a Talent release form, location scouting form, risk assessment form and location release form.
7/11/14 - We will create a logo and choose the best one for our film opening.
19/11/14 - We are going to create a logo animation individually. We will then choose the best one and use that as our logo animation when creating the film opening. We will also research the classification of previous film and films in our genre usually are rated before deciding on a suitable classification for our own film.
26/11/14 - We will create a mind map of potential film ideas as well as a Facebook page in order to let fans know how our creation is coming along. We will also research and find a suitable music source and seek audio permission from the chosen.
3/12/14 - We will collect our poll results for titles and post them on the blog with the winning title idea.
5/12/14 - We will finish the research and planning and be ready to film our opening.
10/12/14 - 12/12/14 - We will begin thinking of the production in terms of individual shot types etc. by creating a storyboard, in order for us to have a precise plan to follow during the shoot. We will finalise plans for shooting, i.e logistics, props etc.
19/12/14 - 30/12/14 - We will aim to complete the filming in this period of time during the christmas holiday.
5/01/15 - We will start the editing process.
30/01/15 - We will complete the rough cut for our film
05/02/15 - We will carry on editing in order to complete the final cut, including ordering the sequence of the video and making it flow seamlessly

Film Opening Title Poll

This is the poll of our refined title ideas which we posted on our Facebook page. These results illustrates our audience feedback and displays that the most appealing title overall is 'Captive'. We have processed this feedback and taken it onto account, therefore decided to use the the chosen idea of 'Captive' as our title we will use in our film opening.
